Gaupp gained significant recognition for his research concerning the primordial cranium in amphibians and reptiles, publishing key findings as early as 1891. His 1900 paper, "Old problems and new research on the vertebrate cranium," synthesized evolving perspectives on cranial development. By 1912, he expanded these investigations into the technical analysis of the Reichert theory, specifically addressing the evolutionary development of the hammer, anvil, and jaw structures.
Scholarship and Legacy
Beyond his original research, Gaupp contributed to the dissemination of anatomical knowledge through his comprehensive revisions of Alexander Ecker and Robert Wiedersheim’s text on frog anatomy, which saw editions in 1896 and 1904. His scholarly contributions were recognized by the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the awarding of the Carus medal in 1909. Following his death in 1916 in Wrocław, his work was further memorialized in the 1917 biography of August Weismann edited by Eugen Fischer.
