A pharmacy opened on Chausseestrasse in 1851 served as the initial foundation for an industrial enterprise that would outlive its founder. Ernst Christian Friedrich Schering, a pharmacist and entrepreneur, directed his operations from the north of Berlin. His work as an apothecary provided the professional grounding for the eventual development of the Schering Corporation.
Early Development in Prussia
Born in 1824 in Prenzlau, Schering operated within the Kingdom of Prussia. His primary professional activity remained concentrated in Berlin, where the landscape of mid-nineteenth-century industry encouraged the growth of modern corporate structures. By establishing his pharmacy in 1851, he transitioned from a local practitioner into the industrial sector, creating the framework for what became known as Schering AG.

Schering died on 27 December 1889 at the age of 65. Following his passing in Berlin, he was buried at the Friedhof III der Gemeinde Jerusalems- und Neue Kirche. This cemetery is located in Berlin-Kreuzberg, specifically situated south of Hallesches Tor.
Institutional Recognition
The Schering Foundation maintains an ongoing connection to his career through several awards. Established in 1991, the Ernst Schering Prize is presented annually to recognize research in biology, chemistry, or medicine. Furthermore, the foundation administered a separate chemistry dissertation prize between 1986 and 2018, which was initially available only to students at the Technical University of Berlin. Thomas M. Klapötke was the inaugural recipient of this specific award.
