Ernst Abbe was born at Eisenach in 1840. His recorded nationality is Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. He was educated at Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium and University of Göttingen.
Professional career and contributions
The nineteenth century professionalised science. Laboratories acquired budgets, universities acquired chairs, and for the first time a person could be a scientist by occupation rather than by inclination.

His work was formally recognised with the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art and honorary member of the Physics Association (Frankfurt am Main, Germany).

Ernst Abbe died in 1905, aged 65. What survives is not the reputation but the result: the part of physics that no longer has to be argued for.
