Early Development and River Plate
Before his professional debut, Lamela gained significant media attention as a 12-year-old youth prospect at River Plate, having scored 120 goals in a single season. Barcelona expressed interest in his services during this period. He made his first-team debut for River Plate on 14 June 2009 against Tigre. During the 2010–11 Argentine Primera División season, he became a regular starter, appearing in 34 games and scoring four goals before the club's relegation.

In August 2011, Lamela moved to the Italian club Roma for a fee of €12 million. His time at the Stadio Olimpico spanned two seasons, during which he scored 15 goals in 33 games during the 2012–13 campaign. His performance in Serie A led to a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in August 2013 for an initial fee of £25.8 million, marking a record transfer for the English club at that time.
Career at Tottenham Hotspur
Lamela spent eight seasons at Tottenham, appearing in over 250 matches for the club. Under manager Mauricio Pochettino, he established himself as a primary playmaker, notably leading the team in assists during the 2014–15 season. His tenure included reaching the UEFA Champions League final in 2019. Following his time in London, he played for Sevilla, where he secured the UEFA Europa League title in 2023, and eventually AEK Athens.
International Representation
Between 2011 and 2018, Lamela represented the Argentina national football team. He participated in two major continental tournaments, featuring in the squads that finished as runners-up in both the 2015 and 2016 editions of the Copa América.
