Endrick: The Boy Who Scored His Way Out

When Endrick was eleven, his father left the family to chase a professional football career at small clubs in Brasília. His mother, unemployed and homeless, put the children into a São Paulo orphanage for six months until he came back. Both parents later worked in a café in an underground train station before his father found a job as a janitor — at Palmeiras. Seven years after that, the same club sold the boy to Real Madrid for €60 million. Almost nothing about his story is ordinary, including the part where he decided, watching his parents struggle to feed him, that becoming a footballer was not an ambition but an obligation.

Taguatinga

Endrick Felipe Moreira de Sousa Pessoa was born on 21 July 2006 in Taguatinga, in Brazil's Federal District, one of four children. He started playing at four. At eight he trained at a Real Madrid camp in Águas Claras — he had grown up supporting the club and idolising Cristiano Ronaldo, an inspiration his father cited as the primary one. At eleven, after nearly signing for São Paulo, he joined the Palmeiras academy.

165 Goals in 169 Games

The academy record is the number that made scouts fly to Brazil: 165 goals in 169 matches across five years. At the 2022 Copa São Paulo, Brazilian youth football's showcase tournament, he scored eight goals in seven matches, was voted Player of the Tournament by supporters, and dragged Palmeiras to their first-ever title in the competition. He was fifteen.

The Youngest Palmeirense

On 6 October 2022, at sixteen years, two months and sixteen days, he became the youngest player ever to appear for Palmeiras' first team, against Coritiba. Nineteen days later he scored twice against Athletico Paranaense, making him the second-youngest goalscorer in the history of the Brazilian Série A. On 2 November he scored the goal that sealed Palmeiras' eleventh league title with a game to spare, and was voted the division's most promising player. In 2023 he scored eleven times — the second-highest total by an under-18 player in Série A history, behind only Ronaldo. He left with two Brazilian championships, two Paulista titles and a Supercopa do Brasil, the last of them won while already contracted elsewhere.

The Deal Signed Two Years Early

On 15 December 2022, five months after his professional debut, Real Madrid announced an agreement to sign him in July 2024, when he turned eighteen. The reported fee was €60 million fixed plus €12 million in taxes, with other accounts describing €35 million fixed and €25 million in performance-related add-ons. It was, in effect, a two-year option on a teenager. He signed a six-year contract on 19 July 2024 and was unveiled at the Santiago Bernabéu eight days later. In May 2024, in a Copa Libertadores match against Independiente del Valle, he had left the field on a stretcher with a right leg injury — the first of the interruptions that would define his Madrid years.

Records Without Minutes

His Madrid career has consisted almost entirely of records set in cameo appearances. On 25 August 2024, on his La Liga debut, he scored against Real Valladolid at eighteen years and 35 days, becoming the youngest foreign player ever to score for Real Madrid in La Liga, surpassing Raphaël Varane. On 17 September 2024 he scored on his Champions League debut against VfB Stuttgart at eighteen years and 58 days: the youngest scorer in Real Madrid's Champions League history and the youngest Brazilian ever to score in the competition. On 2 April 2025 he became the first Madrid player since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2012–13 to score five goals in a single Copa del Rey campaign, finishing joint second in the tournament's scoring.

Then the injuries. A right hamstring-tendon diagnosis on 21 May 2025 ruled him out for at least two months and the Club World Cup. He inherited the number 9 shirt in August 2025 when Kylian Mbappé moved to 10, and made his first appearance under Xabi Alonso on 1 November 2025. On 23 December 2025 Madrid loaned him to Lyon for six months for a €1 million fee and half his wages. He scored on his Coupe de France debut on 11 January 2026, then a hat-trick in a 5–2 win over Metz a fortnight later, and was named Ligue 1 Player of the Month for December/January.

For Brazil he was called up on 6 November 2023 — the youngest male call-up since Ronaldo in 1994 — and debuted eleven days later against Colombia as the fourth-youngest Brazil debutant of all time and the youngest in 57 years. He scored his first international goal at Wembley against England on 23 March 2024, the youngest ever to score at the stadium, and another against Spain four days later. He made the 2026 World Cup squad and came on against Haiti on 19 June 2026. Thirteen caps, two goals.

Why Endrick Is Called a Genius

The claim rests on craft and instinct rather than intellect, and specifically on one faculty: an unteachable sense of where a ball will fall and what to do with it in the fraction of a second before a defender reacts. A left-footed forward with a fierce strike, his defining trait is efficiency in the penalty area — 165 goals in 169 youth games, and then, at senior level, a habit of scoring on debuts. La Liga debut: goal. Champions League debut: goal. Coupe de France debut for Lyon: goal. That pattern is not luck. It reflects a striker's cognition that does not need acclimatisation, because it operates below the level of tactical familiarity.

The comparisons made for him — Ronaldo, Pelé, Romário — he rejects, particularly the Pelé one, and he describes himself in terms conspicuously free of mystique: "I'll always fight. I'll be persistent and try until the last minute I'm in the game. I never give up, I pressure defenders, I run more than anyone else on the pitch." That is a self-portrait of a worker, not a prodigy, and it is probably the more accurate one.

The counter-case is real. He is a finisher, not a creator; his record contains almost no evidence of the game-organising intelligence that the word genius usually implies. His first senior start for Brazil, in the 2024 Copa América quarter-final against Uruguay, was a disaster — he completed exactly one pass, from the kick-off, before Brazil went out on penalties. Two hamstring and leg injuries in eighteen months cost him a season's momentum at Madrid, and by December 2025 the club had loaned him to Ligue 1 to get minutes. He is nineteen with two international goals. What he has demonstrated is a scoring instinct of an unusually early and durable kind. Whether that instinct survives contact with the demands made of a Real Madrid number 9 is not yet knowable.

Legacy So Far

By twenty he holds two Brazilian league titles, records for the youngest foreign scorer in Real Madrid's La Liga history and the youngest Brazilian scorer in Champions League history, and a World Cup appearance. He married Gabriely Miranda in September 2024 and was baptised a Baptist Christian in Madrid that November. His teammates call him "Bobby," after he revealed his admiration for Bobby Charlton following the Wembley goal. He is, for now, a collection of superlatives attached to about a season's worth of accumulated minutes — a career that has produced an extraordinary number of firsts while still waiting for its first ordinary, uninterrupted year.
