Early Development and Education
Born in 1994 in Wollongong, New South Wales, McKeon grew up in an environment deeply integrated with elite swimming. She completed her secondary education at The Illawarra Grammar School in 2012. After a period away from competitive swimming following her omission from the 2012 Olympic team, she moved to Brisbane in 2014 to train at the Chandler Aquatic Centre. Later, she relocated to the Gold Coast to attend Griffith University, where she earned a degree in public health and health promotion with a nutrition major.

McKeon's international career began at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore, where she collected multiple medals across individual and relay freestyle and medley events. Her breakthrough to the senior Olympic stage occurred in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. There, she earned a gold medal as part of the world-record-setting 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay team, alongside additional silver and bronze medals in relay and individual butterfly and freestyle disciplines.
Dominance at the Tokyo and Paris Games
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, McKeon set an Australian record for the most Olympic medals by an individual athlete. Her four gold and three bronze medals brought her career total to 11 at that time. She continued her trajectory at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she added three more medals to her collection. By the conclusion of her career, she achieved a record-breaking six total gold medals, surpassing Ian Thorpe as the Australian athlete with the most Olympic gold medals.
