Emilio Tuñón Álvarez, a Spanish architect born in Madrid in 1959, has established a significant portfolio of public buildings and civic structures. Since the founding of his firm in 1992, his practice has shaped contemporary architectural standards in Spain through a series of museum projects and cultural centers recognized by major international professional institutions.
Professional Beginnings
Tuñón graduated from the Technical University of Madrid in 1981 and later completed his PhD there in 1998. Early in his career, he held positions in the Fine Arts Cultural Department in 1982 and the Architecture Public Works and Urban Planning Department in 1983. Before forming his own firm, he spent a decade working under Rafael Moneo, ending his tenure there in 1992.

In 1992, Tuñón established Mansilla + Tuñón Architects alongside Luis Moreno Mansilla. The firm completed numerous significant works throughout Spain, starting with the Archeological and Fine Arts Provincial Museum of Zamora in 1996. Further notable developments followed, including the Indoor Swimming-Pool in San Fernando de Henares in 1998, the Fine Arts Museum of Castellón in 2000, and the Madrid Regional Documentary Centre in 2002. Later major works encompass the Auditorium of León in 2003, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León in 2004, and the Pedro Barrié de la Maza Foundation in Vigo in 2005. The Royal Collections Museum in Madrid also remains a project attributed to the firm.
Academic Contributions and Honors
Beyond his design practice, Tuñón serves as a professor within the architectural design department at ETSAM. His academic influence extends globally, having held visiting professorships at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, and the Frankfurt Städelschule, alongside various institutions in Navarra, Barcelona, and Puerto Rico. His professional achievements earned him the Spanish Architecture Award in 2003 and again in 2017. In 2007, he received the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture for the MUSAC project. Additional recognition includes the Francqui Chair in 2014 and the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts, which was awarded to Mansilla + Tuñón Architects by the Spanish Ministry of Culture that same year.
