Émile Nouguier

French civil engineer and architect (1841–1897)

The proposal for a three-hundred-meter iron pylon to serve as the centerpiece of the 1889 Universal Exposition originated with Émile Nouguier and Maurice Koechlin in 1884. This structural design project, eventually realized as the Eiffel Tower, marked a definitive moment in the career of an engineer whose contributions spanned major railway and bridge infrastructure across multiple continents.

Early Career and Education

Born in Paris in 1841, Nouguier pursued a formal education in engineering, attending the École Polytechnique in 1861 before joining the École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris. He graduated in 1865 as a mining construction engineer. His professional entry began with the firm Ernest Goüin et Cie between 1867 and 1871, where he participated in the development of the 1867 Expo Palace, the Rue Brémontier road bridge, the Rybinsk Bridge in Russia, and the Margaret Bridge in Budapest.

Collaboration with the Eiffel Company

In 1871, Nouguier transitioned to the Société de Construction des Batignolles, remaining there until 1876. He subsequently joined the company owned by Gustave Eiffel, where he remained until 1893. During this tenure, he managed extensive infrastructure projects including the Garabit Viaduct, the Ponte de D. Maria Pia in Portugal, and numerous railroad bridges across Spain, Portugal, Romania, and Hungary. Eiffel eventually purchased their patent rights for 50,000 francs.

Final Projects and Death

Nouguier resigned from the Eiffel firm in 1893 to serve as co-president of Nouguier, Kessler et Cie in Argenteuil. His final years focused on complex foundation work and bridge construction, such as the Tourville and Oissel bridges over the Seine, the Faidherbe Bridge in Senegal, and a bridge over the Nile in Egypt. He also oversaw the construction of the Saint-Bernard Bridge in Paris, dying at age 57 on 23 November 1897, shortly before that project reached its official opening.
