Émile Deutsch de la Meurthe and his brother Henry assumed control of their father Alexandre's firm, A. Deutsch et ses Fils, in 1877. The siblings later operated the enterprise as Les Fils de A. Deutsch. They maintained refineries across multiple nations, utilizing the suffix de la Meurthe to honor their ancestral origins in the Meurthe region. Their industrial work continued until the integration of their assets into the Shell infrastructure.

Substantial portions of his wealth funded social initiatives throughout France. In 1915, he helped establish the Foundation for Jewish War Orphans. The following year, he founded the Fraternité franco-américaine to assist war orphans internationally. Beyond these organizations, he implemented a private social security system for his company staff and provided critical funding for the development of the Cité internationale universitaire, where the Fondation Deutsch de la Meurthe dormitory currently stands.
Honors and Recognition
His professional and philanthropic contributions led to his appointment as a Commander of the Legion of Honour and a Commander of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. He was also a recipient of the Croix de guerre 1914–1918. Following his death in Quimper in 1924, Paris acknowledged his influence by naming a street in the 14th arrondissement after him in October of that year.
Personal Life and Legacy
He married Louise Halphen, who predeceased him in 1914. They had four daughters: Marie Henriette Emilie, Yvonne Fanny, Lucie Jeanne, and Fernande Amélie Valentine. He died in 1924 and is interred at the Cimetière de Montmartre in Division 3. During the German occupation of France in World War II, the family fled the country, and their private art collection was seized.
