Emerson Fittipaldi

Brazilian racing driver (born 1946)

At the age of 25, Emerson Fittipaldi became the youngest Formula One World Drivers' Champion in history, a record he held for 33 years. Born in São Paulo on 12 December 1946, he transitioned from success in local hydroplane and Formula Vee racing to the global stage, eventually securing two world titles and multiple victories in American open-wheel competition.

Early Development

The son of a motorsports journalist and a Russian-born immigrant, Fittipaldi grew up surrounded by automotive culture. After experiencing a high-speed accident while racing hydroplanes, he shifted his focus toward land vehicles. He rapidly ascended through the ranks, winning the 1967 6 Hours of Interlagos and the 1969 Lombard Championship in Formula Three. This early proficiency earned him a spot in the 1970 Formula Two season with Team Bardahl.

Ascension in Formula One

Fittipaldi entered Formula One at the 1970 British Grand Prix as a third driver for Team Lotus. Following the death of Jochen Rindt, he was promoted to lead driver within five races. He won the 1972 World Drivers' Championship, achieving five victories in eleven races. After a competitive 1973 season where he finished behind Jackie Stewart, he transferred to McLaren.

McLaren and Team Ownership

In 1974, Fittipaldi captured his second world title driving the McLaren M23, assisting the team in securing their inaugural Constructors' Championship. In a move that surprised the paddock, he left McLaren in 1976 to join his brother Wilson at Fittipaldi Automotive. The team struggled to remain competitive, and Fittipaldi retired from the series in 1980, having recorded 14 Grand Prix victories across eleven seasons.

American Open-Wheel Success

Following his Formula One tenure, Fittipaldi moved to the American CART series. He achieved significant results, including the 1989 IndyCar World Series title while driving for Patrick Racing. During this period, he secured two Indianapolis 500 victories, in 1989 and 1993. His career in Indy Car racing concluded in 1996.
