Early Education and Career
Born in 1874 within the Maria Magdalena parish of Stockholm, Beskow pursued formal training at Whitlockska samskolan before enrolling at Konstfack from 1890 to 1895. Her professional life began in the mid-1890s, when she served as a drawing teacher at Whitlockska samskolan between 1894 and 1897. During this time, she contributed to the magazine Jultomten, effectively launching a career that encompassed painting, graphic arts, and literature.

Beskow's artistic approach frequently integrated elements of the fairy tale world with the realities of Swedish rural life. Her compositions often featured Art Nouveau frameworks that surrounded the narrative elements of her pages. She explored relationships between children and adults, while maintaining a focus on the children's personal initiative. By incorporating elves and talking animals into her stories, she maintained a balance between the mundane and the fantastical.
Domestic Life and Later Years
In 1897, she married Natanael Beskow, a theologian and former headmaster at Djursholms samskola. The couple lived in the Villa Ekeliden in Djursholm starting in 1900. They raised six sons, including Bo Beskow and Gunnar Beskow. Throughout her life, she remained an active member of the association Tolfterna. Elsa Beskow died in 1953 in Danderyd and is interred at the Djursholms Begravningsplats.
