Early Development and Academic Pursuit

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1963, Shue spent her formative years in South Orange, New Jersey. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1981. Her higher education included attendance at Wellesley College before a transfer to Harvard University in 1985. Although she initially withdrew to prioritize her acting career, she returned to Harvard years later to complete a Bachelor of Arts in government in 2000.

Television and Film Breakthroughs

Shue’s initial feature roles included The Karate Kid and the 1987 lead vehicle Adventures in Babysitting. She appeared alongside Tom Cruise in 1988's Cocktail and joined the Back to the Future franchise for its second and third installments. Between 1984 and 1985, she held a series regular role in the television program Call to Glory. Her stage work included a 1990 Broadway debut in Some American Abroad and a 1993 performance in Birth and After Birth.

Critical Acclaim and Mid-Career Shift

The 1995 film Leaving Las Vegas marked a pivotal transition in her career. Her portrayal of a character navigating complex circumstances earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, alongside BAFTA, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominations. She secured wins for this performance at the Independent Spirit Awards, the National Society of Film Critics Awards, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards.
