Olympic Athletic Career
Lipă commenced her international competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, at age 19. During those games, she secured her first gold medal in the double sculls event. Over the course of two decades, she achieved a singular distinction in the sport by winning gold medals in both the single sculls and the eight. Her final gold medal arrived at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics, marking a 20-year span between her first and last victories, a record among rowers. In 2004, she also became the first female athlete in her sport to compete in six separate Olympic Games.

Beyond her athletic tenure, Lipă moved into governance and organizational management. Starting in 2009, she assumed the presidency of the Romanian Rowing Federation and the Dinamo București Sports Club. Her political trajectory included service as the Minister of Youth and Sport in the cabinet of Dacian Cioloș, a position she held from November 2015 until January 2017. As of 2024, she serves as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania.
Honors and Distinctions
In recognition of her contribution to international rowing, she received the Thomas Keller Medal at the 2008 Rowing World Cup in Lucerne. She also holds the Order of the Star of Romania.
