Augsburg Town Hall stands as the central landmark of its city, representing the peak of late German Renaissance architecture executed by Elias Holl. Throughout his career, he served his home city as a master builder, general contractor, and architect, shaping the physical environment of the region through both civil engineering projects and structural design work.
Early Career and Training
Born in 1573 at Werbhausgasse 2, Elias Holl descended from a family of master builders. He received his initial training under his father, Hans Holl, who practiced between 1512 and 1594. By 1596, Elias successfully completed his Meisterprüfung exam. To further his professional development, he spent time in Tyrol and Italy during 1600 and 1601, specifically visiting Bozen and Venice to observe architectural styles.

Upon his return, Holl was appointed Werkmeister of Augsburg in 1602. His portfolio includes the Zeughaus, constructed between 1602 and 1607, and the Wertachbrucker Tor in 1605. He continued with the Stadtmetzg in 1609 and the St.-Anna-Gymnasium in 1613. Between 1614 and 1616, he managed the addition to the Perlachturm. His later projects included the Heilig-Geist-Spital, which he worked on from 1626 until 1631 and which now houses the Augsburger Puppenkiste.
Late Life and Dismissal
Political and religious changes significantly impacted Holl's career trajectory. Because he was a Protestant, he lost his position as Stadtbaumeister in 1629. Although he continued his work under the title of Stadtgeometer, he faced full dismissal from municipal office in 1631. He lived for another fifteen years before his death in 1646. He is buried in the Augsburg Protestant Cemetery.
