Eike Batista saw his net worth peak at an estimated US$35 billion in 2012, positioning him as the seventh-wealthiest individual globally and the richest man in Brazil. This fortune, largely tied to his commodities conglomerate, evaporated within months due to collapsing stock values and mounting corporate debts, ultimately resulting in a negative net worth.
Early Career and Gold Trading
Born in 1956 in Governador Valadares, Batista spent his teenage years in Europe before studying metallurgical engineering at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. He began his professional life selling insurance door-to-door while residing abroad. By the early 1980s, he returned to Brazil to trade gold and diamonds. He founded Autram Aurem, a gold trading firm, which generated US$6 million in revenue within eighteen months. He subsequently pioneered mechanized alluvial gold mining in the Amazon.

Batista established the EBX Group to manage his expanding industrial interests. Between 1980 and 2000, he developed eight gold mines across Brazil and Canada, alongside a silver mine in Chile. He expanded into various sectors by launching five distinct entities: OGX for oil and gas, MPX for energy, LLX for logistics, MMX for mining, and OSX for offshore services. These companies were listed on the BOVESPA's Novo Mercado, and their titles were intentionally structured with a three-letter suffix ending in 'X', which he regarded as a symbolic multiplier of wealth.
Financial Decline and Legal Issues
The rapid ascent of the EBX Group faltered as global commodity prices plummeted. By July 2013, his wealth dropped to US$200 million. By 2014, reports indicated his net worth had turned negative, reaching negative US$1 billion according to Forbes and Folha de São Paulo. His legal difficulties mounted following his involvement in corruption scandals; he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for bribing former Rio de Janeiro governor Sérgio Cabral Filho to secure public contracts. He is currently under house arrest.
Modern Business Ventures
Following the collapse of his primary industrial holdings, the EBX Group transitioned into an advisory role, focusing on supporting new startup companies. In 2024, Batista utilized the Market Makers podcast to announce the launch of a new biotechnology startup, known as BRX.
