Early Training and Paris Career
Lalo received his initial musical training at the Regional Conservatory of Lille. At sixteen, he relocated to continue his studies at the Paris conservatoire under François Antoine Habeneck. Following his education, he settled in Paris, where he served as a teacher and performer. In 1848, he joined the Armingaud Quartet, contributing as both a viola and second violin player.

After marrying contralto Julie Besnier de Maligny in 1865, Lalo shifted his creative focus toward stage productions. His opera Le roi d'Ys was his most ambitious project, though it faced significant delays and was not staged until 1888. Critics of the period often dismissed his theatrical and orchestral works as excessively progressive or Wagnerian, leading him to dedicate more energy to chamber music.
Professional Recognition and Later Years
Lalo received the title of Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1888, having previously become a member of the order in 1873. He died in 1892 within the 17th arrondissement of Paris and was interred at the Père Lachaise Cemetery. At the time of his death, he left behind several unfinished projects, including the opera La jacquerie, which was later completed by Arthur Coquard.
