Edmond Michelet

French resistance fighter, concentration camp survivor and politician (1899-1970)

Distributing leaflets throughout Brive-la-Gaillarde on 17 June 1940, Edmond Michelet initiated an act of wartime defiance one day before Charles de Gaulle made his famous appeal. This French politician spent his life navigating the complexities of post-war governance, maintaining a commitment to human rights that originated during his own experiences within the confinement of Nazi-run incarceration.

Wartime Resistance and Incarceration

Before his entry into formal parliamentary service, Michelet engaged in clandestine opposition to the occupation. He provided essential aid to individuals persecuted by Nazi authorities, among them the Catholic philosopher Dietrich von Hildebrand. His activities led to his arrest in 1943. During his subsequent imprisonment at the Dachau concentration camp, he operated under armband number 52579. Despite the dangers of a typhus epidemic, he continued to support fellow prisoners, eventually contracting the illness himself. Assisted by abbé Franz Stock during his detention, Michelet remained at Dachau until 26 May 1945, departing only after the camp was liberated and the remaining sick prisoners had been attended to.

Between 1959 and 1961, Michelet held the office of Minister of Justice. He remained an active participant in public life until his death in 1970 in Brive-la-Gaillarde.
