Moni served as a member of the Jatiya Sangsad for the Chandpur-3 constituency across four terms. Before joining the cabinet, she was the secretary for women's affairs and a member of the sub-committee on foreign affairs for the Awami League. As Foreign Minister, she advocated for the prosecution of those responsible for the 1971 Bangladesh genocide and sought accountability for the killers of President Sheikh Mujib. She later served as Minister of Education and Minister of Social Welfare.
Public Controversies and Legal Investigations
During her time as Foreign Minister, media reports criticized her for frequent international travel, documenting 187 trips over four and a half years; she defended these as government-approved bilateral visits. More recently, she faced scrutiny over allegations of increased personal wealth and her alleged support for illegal sand extraction by local political figures in Chandpur. Following the 2024 non-cooperation movement, legal cases were initiated against her regarding an arson attack and violence against student protesters, leading to her arrest on 19 August 2024.
