Early Career and Education
Eberle began his formal architectural training in 1973 at the Technische Universität Wien, graduating five years later under the supervision of Anton Schweighofer. His initial professional experiences included town planning projects in Tehran. Upon returning to the Vorarlberg region of Austria in the 1980s, he participated in the founding of the Vorarlberg Architects. His early collaborative efforts included the 1979 establishment of the Cooperative Bau- und Planungsgesellschaft alongside Markus Koch, Norbert Mittersteiner, and Wolfgang Juen, a period marked by the Im Fang project, which explored alternative building philosophies.

In 1982, Eberle launched the practice Eberle Egger, which transitioned into the partnership Baumschlager-Eberle in 1985. The firm evolved from its origins in Vorarlberg into a vast network of offices spanning eight countries. Managed by Eberle alongside eleven partners, the practice operates across twelve sites. Eberle emphasizes that architecture must elevate practical functions to a cultural plane, noting that an architect bears a significant responsibility regarding the social impact and resource commitment inherent in every building project.
Academic Contributions
Academic engagement has been a consistent component of Eberle’s work since the 1980s. He has held visiting professorships at institutions in cities including Hanover, Vienna, Linz, Syracuse, Madrid, Jerusalem, Hong Kong, and Barcelona. In 1999, he assumed a full professorship for architecture and design at the ETH Zurich. His administrative roles at the university included serving as the Dean of the School of Architecture from 2003 to 2006 and leading the Center of Housing and Sustainable Urban Development until 2015.
