Early Development and LAMDA
Born in 1931 at the Haven Nursing Home in Swindon, Diana Fluck showed early interest in film. Following her expulsion from Selwood House school, she participated in local theater and beauty pageants. In January 1946, she began her studies at LAMDA, becoming the youngest student at the institution. During her time there, she supplemented her income by posing for the London Camera Club and earned both bronze and silver medals for her elocution and performance work.

Her professional debut occurred in the 1947 noir film The Shop at Sly Corner. Upon the advice of her mother and for contractual clarity, she adopted the surname Dors, taken from her maternal grandmother. She quickly transitioned into roles for Gainsborough Studios, appearing in Holiday Camp and Dancing with Crime. In 1947, she graduated from LAMDA, receiving the London Films Cup as the student most likely to succeed in the industry.
The Rank Organisation Era
At 15, Dors signed with the Rank Organisation, joining a collective talent program managed by Sydney Box. Despite her personal dislike for the program, she gained significant publicity through consistent media appearances. Her filmography expanded with roles in Good-Time Girl and David Lean’s 1948 adaptation of Oliver Twist. While early roles often centered on her public image, contemporaries noted her significant screen energy and raw performance capability.
