Deniz Undav

Deniz Undav made history as the first footballer of Yazidi heritage to represent Germany at a major tournament. Born in Varel in 1996, the forward balanced eight-hour factory shifts with semi-professional football at age 17 before ascending through the German league system to captain VfB Stuttgart and secure a spot on the national team.

Early Development and Minor Leagues

Growing up in Achim, Undav began his training at TSV Achim. Recruited by Frank Braakmann for the Werder Bremen academy in 2007, he was released in 2012 due to concerns over his height. He subsequently developed his skills at SC Weyhe and TSV Havelse, making his senior debut in the 2014–15 Regionalliga. Following stints with Eintracht Braunschweig II and SV Meppen, he established himself as a capable goalscorer in the lower tiers of German football.

Success in Belgium

Undav transitioned to international football in 2020 by joining Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise on a three-year contract. His impact was immediate; he secured the Belgian First Division B championship in 2021 with 17 goals in 26 games. During the 2021–22 season, he achieved a career milestone by scoring a quadruple against K.V. Oostende, ultimately finishing as the league's top scorer with 18 goals and earning the title of Belgian Footballer of the Year.

Premier League Stint

Brighton & Hove Albion acquired Undav for €7 million in January 2022, though he remained on loan at Union Saint-Gilloise for the duration of that campaign. After debuting for Brighton against Manchester United in August 2022, he struggled initially to find the net. He eventually tallied goals against Forest Green Rovers, Middlesbrough, Wolves, Arsenal, and Newcastle United before departing for Germany the following year.

Leadership at VfB Stuttgart

Returning to Germany on loan in 2023, Undav revitalized his career at VfB Stuttgart. His performance, including a hat-trick against RB Leipzig, helped the team finish second in the Bundesliga. Stuttgart signed him permanently in August 2024. By August 2026, he was appointed team captain, having set a personal record of 19 league goals during the 2025–26 season. He also represented the club in the Champions League, marking his debut with a goal against Real Madrid.

Identity and International Duty

Undav is of Kurdish-Yazidi descent, a fact he has publicly defended against external political pressure. Though eligible to play for Turkey, he chose to represent his birth country, Germany. He made his international debut in March 2024 against France and later competed in the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament. He scored his first international goal in a September 2024 draw against the Netherlands.
