Deni Avdija

Deni Avdija debuted for the Maccabi Tel Aviv senior team in 2017 at age 16, establishing himself as the youngest player in the history of the club. His transition from Israeli league success to the National Basketball Association highlights a trajectory that spans international youth championships, professional domestic titles, and a consistent role within the Israeli senior national basketball team.

Early Development and Youth Success

Born in 2001 in Beit Zera, Avdija focused on basketball after playing association football until the fourth grade. He joined the youth ranks of Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2013 and attended Tichon Hadash. Under the guidance of coach Shai Omer, he led his high school team to a national championship in 2018. His international youth profile grew through Basketball Without Borders camps in Belgrade and Charlotte, where he secured MVP honors. At the Adidas Next Generation Tournament, he dominated play as a primary rebounder and scorer.

Professional Tenure in Israel

In November 2017, Avdija signed a six-year contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv, making his league debut shortly thereafter. His progress continued into the EuroLeague, where he gained minutes against teams like Fenerbahçe. During the 2019-2020 season, interrupted briefly by the COVID-19 pandemic, he evolved into a key contributor. He became the youngest player to win the Israeli Basketball Premier League MVP award, alongside selections for the All-Israeli League First Team. His final domestic performances included significant scoring outputs against Hapoel Holon and Hapoel Eilat before he declared for the 2020 NBA draft.

Transition to the NBA

The Washington Wizards selected Avdija with the ninth overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft. He signed his rookie contract in December 2020, though his debut season concluded prematurely due to a right ankle fracture sustained against the Golden State Warriors in April 2021. Following his recovery, he demonstrated durability by playing all 82 games during the 2021-2022 season. In 2024, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.
