The doctoral thesis titled Contribución al estudio de la integral estocástica, completed in 1975 at the University of Barcelona under Francesc d'Assís Sales Vallès, marked the early academic trajectory of David Nualart. Born in Barcelona in 1951, he emerged as a specialist in probability theory with a focus on stochastic processes and analysis.
Academic Appointments and Research
Nualart held faculty positions at the University of Barcelona and the Polytechnique University of Barcelona. He eventually joined the University of Kansas, serving as the Black-Babcock Distinguished Professor of Mathematics from 2012 until his retirement in 2022. During his tenure, his research examined stochastic partial differential equations, Malliavin calculus, and fractional Brownian motion. Beyond his teaching duties, he served as the Chief Editor of Electronic Communications in Probability between 2006 and 2008.

The mathematical community recognized his work through several honors, including the Research Prize of the Real Academia de Ciencias de Madrid in 1991 and the Prize IBERDROLA de Ciencia y Tecnologia in 1999. In 1998, he received an honorary doctorate from the Blaise-Pascal University. Professional societies also acknowledged his contributions; he became a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 1997 and was named to the 2023 class of Fellows of the American Mathematical Society.
Professional Memberships
Nualart maintains connections to numerous international academic bodies. He is a member of the International Statistical Institute, the Bernoulli Society for Mathematical Statistics and Probability, and the American Mathematical Society. In Spain, he holds memberships with the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences, the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona, and the Catalan Mathematical Society. In 2011, the University of Kansas hosted an international conference in his honor, later documented in a 2013 festschrift.
