The multi-instrumentalist David Gilmour joined Pink Floyd in 1967, stepping in to support the band as a replacement for founding member Syd Barrett. Early influences and formative years
Born in Cambridge in 1946 to Douglas and Sylvia Gilmour, David grew up with an early exposure to music through his parents. He began teaching himself guitar at a young age after borrowing an instrument from a neighbor. During his time at the Perse School and later the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology, he crossed paths with future bandmates Syd Barrett and Roger Waters. By 1962, he joined the blues rock outfit Jokers Wild, which recorded a limited number of copies of a single and an album. His early experiences also included traveling through France and working as an assistant for designer Ossie Clark.

Following the departure of Syd Barrett in 1968, Gilmour became the central guitarist for Pink Floyd. The band achieved massive commercial success throughout the 1970s and 1980s. After bassist Roger Waters left the group in 1985, Gilmour assumed leadership, overseeing the production of later studio albums such as A Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell, and The Endless River. His contributions to the band earned him induction into both the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
Solo ventures and production work
Beyond his tenure with Pink Floyd, Gilmour established a solo career that includes five studio albums: David Gilmour, About Face, On an Island, Rattle That Lock, and Luck and Strange. As a producer and mentor, he played a vital role in the early career of Kate Bush, funding her initial professional recordings and securing her a record contract. He is also recognized for his collaborations with artists such as Roy Harper and his involvement with the supergroup Rockestra.
