Early Education and Career
Born in 1964 at Basford, David Braben attended Buckhurst Hill County High School before enrolling at Jesus College, Cambridge. He specialised in Electrical Science during his final year. His professional life began with game design and programming, leading to the establishment of Frontier Developments, where he maintains his position as President. Before his focus shifted toward independent publishing, he participated in the technology market as an investor, including a role at Phonetic Arts, which was acquired by Google in 2010.

Following the success of Elite, Braben released Zarch in 1987 for the Acorn Archimedes, later ported as Virus. His company, Frontier Developments, produced a wide array of titles including RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, Kinectimals, Zoo Tycoon, LostWinds, and games associated with the Wallace & Gromit franchise. While he oversaw the development of the successful Elite: Dangerous, which launched in 2014 and exceeded 2.75 million sales by 2017, other ambitious projects like The Outsider were abandoned due to a loss of publisher support.
Computing and Education Advocacy
Braben co-founded the Raspberry Pi Foundation, a charity focused on enhancing computer science education. In 2011, he introduced a prototype computer the size of a credit card, designed to be an accessible, low-cost tool for children. Equipped with a USB port, HDMI monitor socket, and an ARM processor running Linux, the device was intended to stimulate interest in programming and computing fundamentals within school environments.
Recognition and Professional Status
Over his career, Braben has received numerous distinctions, including being appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2014. He holds a BAFTA Fellowship received in 2015 and is a Fellow of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from Abertay University, the Open University, and the University of York, and was inducted into the UK Games Industry Hall of Fame in 2025.
