Early Development and Academic Training
Born in Surabaya in 1952, Tahir grew up in a residential area characterized by poverty. His parents supported the family through the construction of pedicabs. After finishing his studies at Petra Kalianyar Christian High School in 1971, he initially intended to pursue medical training. Financial constraints following his father's illness forced him to leave his initial higher education path. He eventually secured a scholarship to attend the Nanyang Technological Institute in Singapore, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts and Science. Later, he earned a Master's degree in financial education at Golden Gate University in California at age 35.

During his time as a student in Singapore, Tahir initiated a small-scale trade business, purchasing goods for resale in Surabaya during academic breaks. This experience served as the foundation for his entry into import trade. In 1986, he formalized these interests by establishing the Mayapada Group. The conglomerate grew to encompass a wide array of industries, including banking, media, healthcare, and automotive sectors. During periods of economic volatility, Mayapada Bank maintained stability by avoiding international credit sources, a strategy that distinguished the firm from other banking corporations that faced insolvency.
Public Service and Philanthropic Contributions
Tahir has maintained a dual focus on corporate expansion and civic engagement. In 2013, he pledged over US$100 million to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support global efforts against malaria, polio, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. His public service record includes his appointment by President Joko Widodo to the Presidential Advisory Council in December 2019. His contributions to society and commerce have been recognized through various honors, including the Indonesian Star of Mahaputera 5th Class in 2018 and the Bintang Jasa Utama in 2015.
