Educational Foundation
Borel completed his initial academic training in Switzerland, earning an engineering degree in physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne in 1973. Later that year, he returned to his home country to apply these technical credentials to the emerging field of computer hardware.

Upon returning to Switzerland, Borel focused on the development of his technology firm. He served as the company's chief executive officer during two distinct periods, from 1982 to 1988 and again from 1992 to 1998. Under his leadership, the organization successfully pursued public offerings, first on the Swiss stock market in 1988 and later on the Nasdaq in 1997. He maintained a long-term position as chairman of the board from 1982 until 2008 and currently retains the title of Chairman Emeritus.
Philanthropic and Corporate Endeavours
Beyond his primary business activities, Borel has engaged in various institutional and philanthropic roles. He served as a member of the board of directors for Nestlé between 2004 and 2016. In 2001, he and his wife established Defitech, a foundation focused on providing information technology solutions for disabled individuals. He also acts as chairman of swissUP, an organization dedicated to the advancement of education within Switzerland. In 2010, the Daniel Borel Innovation Center was opened on the campus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne.
Investment and Recognition
In recent years, Borel has shifted focus toward venture-related activities. In 2019, he participated in a fundraising campaign for Unibuddy, a London-based EdTech platform. His financial support continued through subsequent rounds, as the company secured millions in capital. Throughout his career, he has received numerous honors, including the Swiss Entrepreneur of the Year award in 1988, an honorary doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in 1992, and the Ernst & Young Master Entrepreneur of the Year for Switzerland in 2020.
