Born in Victoria in 1972, Payne spent his early twenties as a professional volleyball player. Upon retiring from the sport, he relocated to Australia at the suggestion of his brother, Josh. Between 2002 and 2005, Payne appeared in multiple episodes of the science fiction series Stargate SG-1, portraying characters such as Kull Warriors and an Ashrak assassin. He continued this association with the franchise in the spin-off Stargate Atlantis from 2004 to 2009, notably playing a Wraith king in the episode Sateda.
