Early Life in Egypt
Dalida was born on 17 January 1933 to Italian parents, Pietro and Filomena Giuseppina Gigliotti. Her childhood in Cairo was marked by family hardship, including her father's imprisonment in the Fayed camp during the 1940s and his subsequent death in 1945. She attended the Scuola Tecnica Commerciale Maria Ausiliatrice and pursued early modeling and acting roles, appearing in films such as The Mask of Tutankhamun and A Glass and a Cigarette.

Upon relocating to Paris on 25 December 1954, Dalida struggled to find acting roles. She transitioned to singing after training with Roland Berger and performing at cabarets like Le Drap d'Or and La Villa d'Este. Between 1957 and 1961, she stood as the top-selling recording artist in France.
Career Breadth and Collaborations
Her discography featured diverse tracks including Gigi l'amoroso, Il venait d'avoir 18 ans, and the duet Paroles, paroles with Alain Delon. Her international reach spanned languages including French, Italian, Spanish, English, and Arabic. She frequently collaborated with notable artists such as Charles Aznavour, Petula Clark, Julio Iglesias, and Johnny Mathis. Alongside her brother Orlando, she later managed the record label International Show.
Final Years
Despite a career marked by extensive public recognition and the receipt of the Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, Dalida endured long-term struggles with depression, exacerbated by the 1967 suicide of her partner Luigi Tenco. She continued to perform and appeared in the 1986 film The Sixth Day. Dalida died by suicide from a drug overdose in the 18th arrondissement of Paris on 3 May 1987 and was buried at Montmartre Cemetery.
