Born in 1968 in Mumbai, Mistry was the younger son of construction magnate Pallonji Mistry and Patsy Perin Dubash. Mistry joined the family-run Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Ltd as a director in 1991. He gained prominence for managing the turnaround of Afcons Infrastructure following its 2000 acquisition. His involvement with the Tata Group grew significantly when he joined the Tata Sons board in 2006. In 2012, a selection panel chose him to succeed Ratan Tata. He officially took charge in December 2012, assuming chairmanship of major entities including Tata Steel, Tata Motors, and Tata Consultancy Services.
Legal Disputes and Corporate Governance
Following his 2016 removal, Mistry pursued legal remedies through the National Company Law Tribunal and the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal. While the NCLAT reinstated him in 2019, the Supreme Court of India eventually upheld his dismissal in 2020. Throughout this period, Mistry retained an 18.4% stake in Tata Sons via Cyrus Investments Pvt. Ltd. His net worth reached nearly $29 billion by the time of his death.
Fatal Accident and Legacy
Mistry died on 4 September 2022 in a road crash on the Ahmedabad–Mumbai highway near Charoti, Palghar district. Traveling at 90 km/h, the vehicle hit a bridge divider. A forensic investigation cited poor road design and the failure of rear-seat passengers to wear seat belts as primary factors. He was 54 and was survived by his wife, Rohiqa Chagla, and their two sons, Firoz and Zahan.
