On 18 October 1890, Curt von François founded the city of Windhoek, selecting the site to serve as a strategic buffer between the Nama and Herero people. His career as a German military officer and administrator spans the late nineteenth-century expansion of colonial interests, notably in the territories of Togo, Kamerun, and German South-West Africa.
Military Origins and Early Expeditions
Born in Luxembourg in 1852, Curt Karl Bruno von François was the son of a Prussian general. Following his military service, he transitioned to geographic exploration. In 1883, he joined an expedition along the Kasai River in the Congo Basin led by Hermann Wissmann, later collaborating with George Grenfell. These efforts preceded his assignment to the German General Staff and subsequent research duties in German West Africa.

In 1889, von François arrived in Walvis Bay to provide security for German colonial interests. He established his headquarters at the Alte Feste in Windhoek and later founded the port of Swakopmund on 4 August 1892. Serving as Reichskommissar from 1891 to 1893 and later as Landeshauptmann, he focused on mapping the region and consolidating German control through treaties with local leaders such as Samuel Maharero. His administration concluded in 1894 when he was succeeded by Theodor Leutwein.
Legacy and Historical Record
After retiring from the military in 1895, von François resided in Zernsdorf and produced several texts regarding his experiences and tactical theories, including works on warfare in South Africa. He died in 1931 in Königs Wusterhausen and was interred at the Invalids' Cemetery in Berlin. A statue erected in his honor in Windhoek in 1965 was removed in 2022. The Alte Feste, which he initiated, remains a standing structure currently utilized as a museum.
