Cornelis Johannes van Houten

Dutch astronomer (1920–2002)

Cornelis Johannes van Houten is remembered in astronomy for work that changed what the next generation was able to take for granted.

Cornelis Johannes van Houten was born at The Hague in 1920. His recorded nationality is Netherlands. He was educated at Leiden University.

Twentieth-century science was collaborative, expensive and political: the questions were pursued by teams, and the answers had consequences that reached well past the laboratory.

The institutions that housed his research were Leiden University, where the work centred on astronomy.

Every advance in astronomy has been an advance in seeing - better optics, better records, better ways of trusting faint light.

The Netherlands setting is not incidental. National academies, funding and language decided which findings travelled and which stayed local, in this period as in ours.

The measure that matters is durability. Results that survive re-examination become the floor of a discipline, and it is on that floor that everything afterwards is built.

Death came in 2002, at 82. By then the contribution had passed into the settled body of astronomy, where it is used without being credited - the surest sign that it was right.
