Early Training and Royal Patronage
Rauch’s initial technical grounding began in 1790 under Friedrich Valentin at Arolsen, followed by an assistantship with Johann Christian Ruhl in Kassel starting in 1795. Following the deaths of his father and brother, he relocated to Berlin and served as a groom of the chamber in the royal household. Exposure to the artistic circle of Johann Gottfried Schadow encouraged his formal development, eventually leading to a scholarship funded by Queen Louisa of Prussia for study at the Prussian Academy of Art.

In 1804, financial support from Count Sandrecky enabled a move to Rome, where he spent six years refining his craft. During this time, he associated with Antonio Canova, Bertel Thorvaldsen, and Wilhelm von Humboldt. His portfolio from this era included busts of Raphael Mengs and Zacharias Werner, alongside bas-reliefs such as Mars and Venus wounded by Diomede and a depiction of Hippolytus and Phaedra.
Public Commissions and Monumental Works
Upon his return, Rauch secured a reputation for state-sponsored monuments, including statues for Berlin, Potsdam, Munich, and Wittenberg. His productivity was extensive; by 1824, he had completed 70 marble busts. His final years focused on the colossal equestrian monument honoring Frederick II of Prussia, unveiled in 1851, and projects such as the Immanuel Kant statue in Königsberg. He held memberships in prestigious institutions, including the Académie des beaux-arts and the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.
