Christian Atsu, a professional footballer from Ghana, played as a winger for top-flight European clubs before his career ended in Turkey. Between 2012 and 2019, he earned 65 international caps for his home country, representing Ghana across four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. His journey concluded abruptly at the age of 31.
Formative Years in Ghana
Born in Ada Foah on 10 January 1992, Atsu grew up in a family of ten siblings. His early life was marked by poverty as the son of a fisherman and farmer. He pursued football through the Feyenoord Football Academy in Gomoa Fetteh and the West African Football Academy located in Sogakope. He subsequently joined the Cheetah club in Kasoa to refine his professional skills.

Atsu arrived at FC Porto at age 17. Although he did not debut for the first team under manager André Villas-Boas, he gained experience during a loan spell at Rio Ave for the 2011-12 season. He debuted for Rio Ave on 28 August 2011 and netted his first league goal against Benfica in December. Upon returning to Porto for the 2012-13 season, he became a regular fixture, helping the club secure its third consecutive national championship.
Premier League and International Assignments
In September 2013, Chelsea acquired Atsu for a reported £3.5 million on a five-year contract. He never made a first-team appearance for the London club, spending subsequent years on loan at Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, and Málaga. He joined Newcastle United on loan in 2016 and transferred there permanently in May 2017 for £6.2 million. His international contributions culminated in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where he earned Player of the Tournament and Goal of the Tournament accolades.
Final Seasons and Death
After departing Newcastle, Atsu had a brief stint with Al-Raed in Saudi Arabia. In September 2022, he signed a one-year deal with the Turkish Süper Lig club Hatayspor. On 5 February 2023, he scored a final-minute goal against Kasımpaşa. The following day, he was caught in the Turkey-Syria earthquake in Antakya, which resulted in his death.
