Chris Wolstenholme

British bassist

The English rock band Muse rebranded from Rocket Baby Dolls in 1994, marking the start of a career defined by the distinctive, overdriven bass work of Christopher Tony Wolstenholme. Born in Rotherham in 1978, the musician became known for his intricate use of effects, synthesisers, and heavy finger-style playing, which elevated the bass guitar to a primary melodic role.

Early Development and Musical Evolution

Wolstenholme grew up in Rotherham before relocating to Teignmouth, Devon. Initially a drummer for a post-punk group, he transitioned to bass at the urging of bandmates Matt Bellamy and Dominic Howard. This collaboration formed the foundation of Muse. His technical approach often deviates from traditional root notes, favouring a lead-guitar style. He achieves his signature tone by splitting signals through multiple Marshall amplifiers, incorporating distortion pedals like the Big Muff and Animato, and using Kaoss Pads to modulate effects in real time.
