Early Life and Education
Born in 1910 within the Wat Sai quarter of Thonburi Province, he was the son of an immigrant from Chaoyang, Shantou, Guangdong, China. His father was employed at a local sawmill. At age five, he was sent to China for schooling. He returned to Thailand at 17, initially entering the workforce as a manual labourer before transitioning into business.

The establishment of Bangkok Bank in 1944 served as the primary vehicle for his commercial ventures, which later expanded to include Bangkok Insurance. In 1957, political circumstances changed significantly in Thailand under the leadership of Sarit Thanarat. Following a loss of political favour, he moved to Hong Kong. During his time in Hong Kong, he oversaw the continued growth of his banking interests, leading to a listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange by 1972.
Family and Succession
He entered into two marriages. His first marriage to Lau Kwei-ying resulted in two sons, Rabin and Chatri Sophonpanich. With his second wife, Boonsri, he had seven children, including Chote and Chodchoi Sophonpanich. Generational succession became a feature of the bank's history, with Chatri serving as president from 1980 to 1992, followed by Chartsiri Sophonpanich in 1994. Other family members, including Bernard Chan and the Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanich, have held roles in government and public sectors.
