Born in 1960 in Suwon, Chey Tae-won completed his undergraduate education at Korea University, earning a bachelor's degree in physics. His industrial oversight includes serving as chairman of SK Innovation starting in 2011, SK Hynix in 2012, and SK Telecom since February 2022. He was also twice elected president of the Korea Handball Federation.

In 2012, Chey faced indictment regarding the embezzlement of more than $40 million from SK companies, funds allegedly used to cover trading losses. The Seoul District Court found him guilty in 2013 and sentenced him to four years in prison, where he remained until his pardon in August 2015. His personal life has also faced public scrutiny, particularly regarding his marriage to Roh Soh-yeong, the daughter of former president Roh Tae-woo.
