Charles Michel became the youngest Belgian prime minister in 173 years when he took office in 2014, breaking a precedent set in 1841. Early Political Trajectory
Born in 1975, Michel entered the political sphere early by joining the Young Liberal Reformers of Jodoigne at age 16. By 1994, he secured a position as a provincial councilor in Walloon Brabant. After completing his studies in law at the Université libre de Bruxelles and the University of Amsterdam in 1998, he practiced at the Brussels Bar. His rapid rise continued in 1999 when he was elected to the federal Chamber of Representatives. At age 25, he achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest regional minister in Belgian history while serving in the Walloon Government.

In 2011, Michel assumed the presidency of the Francophone liberal Reformist Movement, leading the party into the 2014 federal election. Following complex coalition negotiations, he formed a government consisting of the MR, N-VA, OVLD, and CD&V. His administration implemented significant structural changes, including a tax shift to reduce social security contributions and pension reforms under the Bacquelaine law. The government faced a terminal political crisis in December 2018 regarding the Global Compact for Migration, which led the N-VA to exit the coalition and Michel to submit his resignation to the King.
European Council Presidency
Following his tenure as caretaker prime minister during the 2019 federal election, Michel was appointed President of the European Council. He formally assumed the role on 1 December 2019, succeeding Donald Tusk. Throughout his mandate, which concluded in 2024, he represented the union in high-level diplomatic affairs. In January 2024, he briefly indicated plans to step down early to pursue a seat in the European Parliament election before reversing the decision to complete his full term.
