Charles Konan Banny served as the Prime Minister of Ivory Coast from 7 December 2005 until 4 April 2007. An economist by training who rose through the ranks of regional finance, his tenure occurred during a critical period of national transition, ultimately shaping his role in the country's economic and political governance.
Early Career and Banking
Born in 1942 in Divo, Banny pursued his education at the ESSEC Business School. He began his professional career in 1976 by joining the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO). He spent over a decade rising through internal roles before becoming the Special Advisor to the Governor in 1988. In December 1990, he assumed the role of Interim Governor following the appointment of Alassane Ouattara as Prime Minister. By 1 January 1994, Banny was formally appointed Governor, a position he held for consecutive terms until his move into national politics.

In December 2005, Banny was named the transitional Prime Minister of Ivory Coast, succeeding Seydou Diarra. Concurrently, he served as the Minister of the Economy and Finance until April 2007. His term was originally designed to bridge the gap until national elections could be conducted in October 2006. When these elections were delayed, the mandate of President Laurent Gbagbo was extended, which subsequently expanded Banny's executive authorities. Due to his status as the transitional head of government, Banny was disqualified from seeking the presidency.
Transition and Later Life
Following a peace agreement signed in March 2007, Guillaume Soro was selected to lead the government. Banny vacated the office of Prime Minister on 4 April 2007, transferring power to Soro. Years later, in September 2021, Banny was medically evacuated from Ivory Coast to Europe. On 10 September 2021, he died from COVID-19 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, at the age of 78.
