Dance performed extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company in London and Stratford-upon-Avon. He returned to the company in 1989 and 1990 to perform the title role in Coriolanus. His screen career started in 1974 with the ITV series Father Brown. He moved into feature films with the 1981 James Bond entry For Your Eyes Only, playing the character Claus.

Television success arrived with his 1984 portrayal of Guy Perron in The Jewel in the Crown. Subsequent major television roles include Mr Tulkinghorn in Bleak House, Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones, and Lord Mountbatten in The Crown. Film credits include Michael Collins, Gosford Park, The Imitation Game, Mank, and The King's Man. He also appeared in genre works such as Alien 3, Last Action Hero, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Directing and Recognition
Dance made his directorial debut with the 2004 drama Ladies in Lavender, which he also wrote and executive produced. In 2009, he directed an adaptation of The Inn at the Edge of the World. For his services to drama, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2006. He received the Time Machine Award in 2013.
