Born in Jakarta on 18 June 1962 to A. G. Tanjung and Halimah, Chairul Tanjung witnessed his father's magazine business struggle under the Suharto regime, forcing the family into a smaller residence. He graduated from Boedi Oetomo Senior High School in 1981 before entering the University of Indonesia. While studying at the Faculty of Dentistry between 1981 and 1987, he earned recognition as a national noble student in 1984 and 1985. His initial commercial activities began alongside two friends, focusing on stationery, T-shirts, and medical supplies, before he transitioned into footwear manufacturing with a loan of Rp 150 million from Exim Bank.

The Formation and Growth of CT Corp

Tanjung established the foundation for his holding company, formerly known as Para Group and now branded as CT Corp. He partnered with Hasbi Hafani to expand his footprint, notably acquiring Bank Karman, which he rebranded as Bank Mega. This move initiated a significant shift toward financial services, including insurance and specialized financing. The group eventually structured itself into three primary pillars: Mega Corp for financial services, Trans Corp for media and retail, and various investments covering plantations and transportation.

Expansion into Media, Retail, and Infrastructure

Trans Corp serves as the engine for his media and consumer-facing enterprises. The portfolio includes television channels such as Trans TV, Trans7, and licensed versions of CNN and CNBC Indonesia, alongside digital platforms like Detik.com. His retail and lifestyle interests are equally broad, encompassing the operation of Transmart, Metro department stores, and various luxury fashion brands. He also maintains property projects, including Trans Studio Malls and hotel chains, and holds stakes in Garuda Indonesia, the country's national carrier.

Public Service and Recognition

Beyond his business ventures, Tanjung served as the Coordinating Minister for Economics. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appointed him to this government position on 19 May 2014, following the resignation of Hatta Rajasa. His earlier public contributions included leading the Badminton Association of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004. His influence in the domestic sphere was formally recognized in 2021 with the Asia's Most Influential Indonesia award.
