Early Development and Migration
Born to parents Eric and Jenny, Campbell spent her childhood in Malawi, where she was homeschooled and first learned to swim in the family pool. The family relocated to Australia in 2001, settling in Brisbane. She later completed her secondary education at Kenmore State High School. Her sister Bronte also became an elite swimmer, and the two siblings later competed together on the national stage.

Campbell participated in four Olympic Games throughout her career. Her debut occurred in 2008, where she earned a bronze medal in the 4x100 metre freestyle relay and placed third in the individual 50 metre freestyle. During the 2012 London Games, she contributed to a gold medal performance in the 4x100 metre freestyle relay. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, she was part of the squad that set a world record of 3:30.65 in the 4x100 metre freestyle relay and secured a silver medal in the 4x100 metre medley.
Championship Records and Training
At the 2013 World Aquatics Championships, Campbell claimed the gold medal in the 100 metre freestyle with a time of 52.34 seconds. In 2015, she became the first woman to finish the 100 metre freestyle under 51 seconds in a short course event, recording 50.91 at the Australian Short Course Swimming Championships. Throughout her career, she trained under coaches Simon Cusack, Damien Jones, and Vince Raleigh.
Later Career and Recognition
Following the 2016 Olympic Games, Campbell took a year-long hiatus from professional competition to focus on personal recovery. She returned to the pool and later served as a joint flagbearer for Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In 2014, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her services to sport. She attended the Queensland University of Technology.
