Junior Career and Professional Transition
Before joining the professional ranks, Ruud achieved the world No. 1 junior ranking on 4 January 2016, becoming the first Norwegian to reach that position. His transition to the professional tour included immediate success, notably winning the Copa Sevilla in his first ever ATP Challenger tournament appearance. By the end of 2016, he had climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 225.

Ruud gained early international attention in 2017 by reaching the semifinals of the ATP 500 Rio Open, making him the youngest player to achieve that feat since 2014. He continued his progression in 2018 by qualifying for the main draws of the Australian Open, French Open, and US Open. In 2019, he became the first Norwegian to enter the ATP top 100 since his father, Christian Ruud, had done so in 1994.
