Early Development and Radio Stardom
Born in 1909 in Várzea da Ovelha e Aliviada, Portugal, Miranda moved to Brazil as an infant. Her initial professional experience involved crafting hats and working in retail. After meeting composer Josué de Barros, she recorded her first single in 1929. Her career accelerated through exclusive radio contracts with Rádio Mayrink Veiga and Rádio Tupi, eventually becoming the highest-paid radio singer in Brazil. Her rapid ascent paralleled the burgeoning popularity of samba during the Getúlio Vargas era.

After Broadway producer Lee Shubert witnessed her performance at Rio de Janeiro’s Cassino da Urca, she secured an eight-week contract for the production The Streets of Paris in 1939. This success led to her Hollywood debut in the 1940 film Down Argentine Way. She starred in 14 American films between 1940 and 1953, including Busby Berkeley’s 1943 musical The Gang's All Here, which cemented her visual trademark of elaborate fruit hat costumes.
Professional Legacy and Later Years
By the end of World War II, public interest in her specific screen persona began to decline. Despite her resentment toward the stereotypical image she had cultivated, she continued performing on television variety shows and in nightclubs. Her work is recognized for popularizing Brazilian music and influencing the 1960s Tropicalismo movement. She died in 1955 at her home in Beverly Hills and was interred at the Cemitério de São João Batista.
