Carl Westman

Swedish architect (1866-1936)

The Stockholm Court House, constructed between 1911 and 1915, stands as a primary example of the National Romantic style championed by Carl Westman. Throughout his career, which spanned from the late nineteenth century to the mid-1930s, he transitioned from early experiments with traditional Swedish materials toward the cleaner, classical lines prevalent in Nordic architecture during the 1920s.

Professional Formation and Early Practice

Born in 1866 at the Uppsala Cathedral Assembly, Westman received his formal technical training at the Royal Institute of Technology between 1885 and 1889. He continued his education at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts from 1889 to 1892. Following his marriage to artist Elin Andersson in 1893, he relocated to New York City. There, he gained professional experience working with architect R. L. Daus for two years. Upon his return to Sweden in 1895, he assisted Aron Johansson on the Parliament House project before establishing his private practice in 1897.

Advocacy of National Romanticism

Westman sought to integrate Swedish cultural building precedents with principles borrowed from the English Arts and Crafts movement. He emphasized the use of brick and wood to establish a distinct aesthetic identity. The Swedish General Medical Association building in Stockholm, completed in 1906, serves as the initial realization of this style. His later work on the Röhss Museum in Gothenburg, constructed between 1910 and 1914, reinforced this stylistic trajectory.

Transition to Institutional Hospital Architecture

Appointed chief architect of the National Swedish Board of Health in 1916, Westman shifted his focus toward healthcare infrastructure. During this final phase of his career, he embraced the neo-classical style of the 1920s. His portfolio includes the Beckomberga Hospital, designed between 1927 and 1935, which featured a strictly symmetrical plan. His final project, the Karolinska Hospital, was conceived during the mid-1930s and completed posthumously in 1940, showcasing a move toward more functionalist design principles.
