Early Education and Recognition
Born in 1851 in Kungsör, Hellqvist spent his youth near Lake Mälaren. He began his formal art training in 1864 at the Swedish Royal Academy of Fine Arts located in Stockholm. His talent earned early validation in 1875 when he received the Academy's top honor for his painting depicting Gustav Vasa accusing Peder Sunnanväder and Mäster Knut. This distinction paved the way for his professional advancement.

In 1877, Hellqvist secured a travelling scholarship from the Royal Academy, which enabled him to explore the European continent. He relocated to Munich in 1879, accompanied by his fiancée, Julie Karoline Friederike Thiersch. The couple married in 1882 before moving to Paris. During this period, he exhibited his work, including The Death of Sten Sture the Younger on the Ice of Lake Mälaren, at the Paris Salon.
Professional Decline and Final Years
By 1886, Hellqvist faced health issues characterized by severe headaches, forcing him to take a leave of absence from his teaching position at the Königliche akademische Hochschule für die Bildenden Künste in Berlin. This period marked the conclusion of his historical painting career. In 1889, he received medical treatment and was placed on a restrictive diet. He entered a mental hospital in Munich in March 1889 and remained there until his death on 19 November 1890 at the age of 38. He was buried in Munich.
