Carl-Erik Sjöstedt

Swedish occidentalist and mathematician

The publication of Le Axiome de Paralleles de Euclides a Hilbert, a massive thousand-page mathematical encyclopaedia released in 1968, represents the late-career output of Swedish educator and philosopher Carl-Erik Sjöstedt. His professional life spanned decades of administrative and academic service, deeply rooted in the philosophical traditions of Uppsala and the specific challenges of geometry.

Academic Foundations and Philosophical Ties

Born on 31 July 1900 in Eskilstuna parish, Sjöstedt pursued his higher education at Uppsala University. He attained his Bachelor of Arts in 1921, followed by a licentiate in 1927 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1930, having defended his thesis on geometry the previous year. During this period, he forged a lasting alliance with philosopher Adolf Phalén. Sjöstedt became a committed proponent of Uppsala philosophy, frequently opposing the intellectual frameworks championed by figures such as Hans Larsson.

Educational Administration and Reform

Sjöstedt taught at private institutions until 1931 before lecturing in mathematics at the Jämtlands Gymnasium Wargentin. By 1939, he served as headmaster of the secondary school in Borås. His influence expanded significantly while serving as Undervisningsråd for the Swedish Board of Education from 1940 to 1962. During these years, he actively campaigned against the 1950s movement toward comprehensive schools, which he publicly characterized as an educational utopia of unmanageable proportions.

Linguistic Contributions and Geometry

Beyond his domestic pedagogical duties, Sjöstedt was a devoted scholar of the auxiliary language Interlingue, then known as Occidental. He established the Swedish Occidental-Federation in 1928 and contributed regularly to journals such as Li Sved Occidentalist and Cosmoglotta. His academic output was prolific, encompassing textbooks on geometry, formal logic, and the history of philosophical problems. Key works include his 1932 text Projektiv geometri, the 1937 treatise Geometriens axiomsystem, and the 1950 Filosofisk läsebok.
