Born in 1877 in Medan, Hirschmann transitioned from his role as an association football player to a key figure in football administration. In 1904, he participated in the establishment of FIFA. Following the death of FIFA president Daniel Burley Woolfall in 1918, Hirschmann assumed the responsibilities of the presidency on an interim basis. Operating independently and financing activities through his own resources, he managed the organization's affairs to prevent collapse. He held this leadership role until March 1921, when Jules Rimet was elected as the third president.
Olympic Contributions and Financial Reversal
Hirschmann played a role in the formation of the Dutch Olympic Committee in 1912. His career encountered a crisis following the 1929 economic collapse. His stock trading company filed for bankruptcy, resulting in the loss of funds he had held in trust for both the Dutch Olympic Committee and FIFA. In 1931, he resigned from his positions within both organizations.
Legacy and Portrayal
Hirschmann died in 1951 in Amsterdam at the age of 74. His involvement in the early years of global football administration was later dramatized in the 2014 film United Passions, in which the character of Hirschmann was portrayed by actor Fisher Stevens.
