Early Development and Training
Born in 1985 in the City of Westminster, Mulligan spent parts of her childhood in West Germany, where she attended the International School of Düsseldorf. Upon returning to the United Kingdom, she enrolled at the Woldingham School. Her interest in acting was solidified by a performance of The King and I and later encouraged by Kenneth Branagh. Following her graduation, she bypassed traditional university paths to pursue a career in drama.

Mulligan secured her first stage role in the 2004 production of Forty Winks at the Royal Court Theatre. Shortly after, she appeared as Kitty Bennet in the film Pride & Prejudice. Her television debut followed in the BBC adaptation of Bleak House. She gained further recognition for her performance in the 2007 Doctor Who episode Blink and her portrayal of Nina in the stage revival of The Seagull, which marked her Broadway debut.
Acclaimed Film and Television Roles
Her performance as a 1960s schoolgirl in the 2009 film An Education earned her a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She later garnered Academy Award nominations for her work in the black comedy Promising Young Woman and the biopic Maestro.
