Cara Delevingne: The Model Who Refused the Job

At ten she appeared in an editorial in *Vogue Italia*. At nineteen she walked her first London Fashion Week show. By 2015 she was the second highest-paid model in the world at $9 million a year — and had already begun turning down runway work to chase an acting career nobody had asked her to have. The eyebrows became a decade-defining beauty trend. What is less often reported is that the person underneath them had been medicated for depression since fifteen, and would spend her thirties dismantling the persona in public.

Belgravia and Bedales

Cara Jocelyn Delevingne was born on 12 August 1992 in Hammersmith, London, to the property developer Charles Hamar Delevingne and Pandora Stevens Delevingne, and grew up in Belgravia. Her maternal grandfather was the publishing executive Jocelyn Stevens; her paternal grandaunt was the courtesan Doris Delevingne. She has two older sisters, Chloe and Poppy, a paternal half-brother, Alexander Jaffe, and sixteen godparents, among them Joan Collins. She attended Bedales School from 2003 to 2009, where she struggled with dyspraxia and depression.

The depression began at fifteen, after she discovered her mother's drug addiction. She left school for six months and agreed to take medication — which, she has said, may have saved her life. An ADHD diagnosis followed, revealed in 2017.

Scouted by Burberry

In 2011 the designer Christopher Bailey scouted her, and she made her catwalk debut at London Fashion Week in the Burberry Prorsum autumn/winter show. She appeared in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2012 and won Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards that year and again in 2014. In 2013 she walked the Chanel show at Linlithgow Palace, in the tartan collection. Campaigns followed for Chanel, Dior, Marc Jacobs, Burberry, DKNY, Tag Heuer, Yves Saint Laurent and Mango; covers for *Vogue*, *V*, *British GQ*, *Elle UK* and the *Wall Street Journal*.

By 2013 she was the most-googled figure in fashion and the most-reblogged model on Tumblr — the first supermodel whose value was measurable in engagement rather than editorial. She ranked sixth on the Forbes highest-paid models list in 2014 at $3.5 million, second in 2015 at $9 million, and 20th on the *Evening Standard*'s Power 1000 in 2013 after being listed among London's thousand most influential people in 2011. She designed two collections for DKNY, mostly unisex, and four for Mulberry.

Crossing Into Film

She played Princess Sorokina in *Anna Karenina* in 2012, voiced a DJ in *Grand Theft Auto V* in 2013, made her television debut in *Playhouse Presents* opposite Sylvia Syms in 2014 and starred in Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel short *Reincarnation*. Her real arrival was *Paper Towns* in 2015, as Margo Roth Spiegelman; the critic Justin Chang called her "the real find of the film." That same year she appeared in *Pan* and in Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" video, which broke Vevo's 24-hour record with 20.1 million views.

Then came the blockbuster years and their mixed returns: Enchantress in *Suicide Squad* and the lead in *Kids in Love* (2016), Laureline in Luc Besson's *Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets* (2017), plus *Tulip Fever*, *London Fields* and Amazon's *Carnival Row* opposite Orlando Bloom. She joined the second season of *Only Murders in the Building* in 2022, and in March 2024 made her stage debut as Sally Bowles in the West End production of *Cabaret*, running twelve weeks.

The Other Careers

She sings and plays drums and guitar. In 2011 and 2012 she wrote and recorded two albums under Simon Fuller but turned down the record deal over concerns about naming. She recorded an acoustic "Sonnentanz" with Will Heard in 2013, worked with Pharrell Williams on "CC the World" for *Reincarnation*, released "I Feel Everything" from *Valerian* in 2017, and sang backing vocals on St. Vincent's "Pills" and Fiona Apple's *Fetch the Bolt Cutters*. In May 2026 she signed to Warner Records, released the singles "I Forgot" and "Out of My Head" with a short film by Jessica Lee Gagné, and announced an eleven-date European and North American tour with a debut album due that summer.

Elsewhere: a young adult novel, *Mirror, Mirror*, co-written with Rowan Coleman in 2017 with LGBT themes; the vegan Prosecco line Della Vite launched with her sisters in 2020; a comic for *The Most Important Comic Book on Earth* in 2021; the environmental platform EcoResolution, founded with Advaya, and advocacy for making ecocide an international crime. After the killing of Cecil the lion in 2015 she auctioned her own TAG Heuer watch, raising £18,600 for WildCRU.

The Reckoning

Delevingne has been unusually specific in public about addiction: cannabis, LSD and GBL daily, plus ketamine, Xanax, GHB and cocaine from adolescence, when she also dealt. She entered a rehabilitation programme after her thirtieth birthday in late 2022 and has been sober since. In October 2017 she alleged that Harvey Weinstein had sexually harassed her around 2016, attempting a non-consensual kiss and propositioning her for a threesome in exchange for a role; she declined, was cast anyway, and regretted taking it, saying his conduct "terrified" her. She also alleged he had told her around 2014 that she would never work as an actress in Hollywood because of her sexuality.

She came out as genderfluid in May 2018, uses she/her pronouns, previously identified as pansexual, and publicly confirmed a lesbian identity in May 2026. Her relationships have included the musician St. Vincent, the actress Ashley Benson, and, since 2022, the musician Leah Mason. In March 2024 her Studio City home burned down in a fire that took ninety-four firefighters to fight and was declared a total loss; she was not there, and her two cats survived.

Why Cara Is Called a Genius

The word does not belong to her in its conventional sense, and the honest version of the case says so up front. Nobody quoted in the record calls Delevingne a genius of intellect; she is dyspraxic, has ADHD, and left formal education early. What she has is a specific and rare commercial-creative intelligence: an instinct for self-presentation calibrated to a medium — social platforms — that fashion had not yet learned to use. In an industry that had trained models to be mute surfaces, she was the first at that altitude to be loud, funny and visibly odd, and she converted that into $9 million a year and Model of the Year twice. Her thick, unplucked eyebrows are frequently credited with reversing a beauty orthodoxy that had held for two decades, which is a small thing that happened to millions of faces.

The craft claim, where it exists, is about camera presence rather than technique, and the critical evidence is thin but real — Justin Chang's verdict on *Paper Towns* stands beside a run of films that critics did not much like. Her acting career has been erratic; her music arrived at thirty-three after a deal she declined at twenty; her books and businesses are the portfolio of a personality rather than the output of a discipline. If there is genius here, it is the genius of knowing what a persona is worth, and then having the nerve to spend twenty years spending it down.

Legacy

She has a lion tattooed for her Leo birth sign, an elephant for her grandmother, "MADE IN ENGLAND" on the sole of one foot. She fronted the BBC Three series *Planet Sex* in 2022, six episodes travelling the world investigating human sexuality — a project that reads, in retrospect, like a public working-out. Three Teen Choice Awards, a British Independent Film Award nomination and inclusion in the *Sunday Times Magazine*'s "100 Makers of the 21st Century" is a strange trophy cabinet. It belongs to someone who arrived as an image and has spent the years since insisting on being a person.
